"Simple, engaging, amusing and ultimately very moving" -  Salford Film Festival- Programme Director.

"A moving thought-provoking film to remind you how State care can be anything but care at times" - Film London

"Wonderful" - Andrew Reid Director NI Screen.

“Call Me Son was great, a joy to watch and the young boy fits the part perfectly.”

“The films were excellent and not at all what we expected – very thought-provoking.”

“I really enjoyed CALL ME SON and I also liked the The Morning News.

I would love to watch them again!”

“I really like the camcorder idea which gave a real sense of the young man's feelings as

did the window cleaner scene which said a lot in a little time. I felt that the actor Ciaran was a real find. Also loved the music - excellent choice. Overall very though provoking.”

“It was a pleasure to attend and to hear you as you speak with passion for what you do. Both films are of subjects that everyone can relate to as we all grow old and we all need to have some security in our lives growing up and most of us are fortunate not to be in the "sons" position but the message was very clear. You made my wife cry so it obviously was also good enough for the message to cross the language divide as her English isn’t perfect.”

“I began to feel I wanted to know more of the life history of the boy as the film developed which means I was drawn into the story. Despite the fact that you were working within a very short time-frame it captivated me.

The subject is highly emotive and one that touches relatively few of us in a personal way. Unfortunately in my previous job I saw the effects of the subject matter of the film and the devastation it creates for young lives.

I must say that I really enjoyed (not a very good descripton) having the opportunity to see The Morning News again, it had lost none of its poignancy with the passage of time.”

"Call me Son" really brings the plight of fostered children home to its audience. The statistics at the end credits make you stand back and think. At the end of the day no child is born bad, but given the way society treats these unfortunate children who can blame them if they do - it makes me more appreciative of the love I received at home, you just take certain things for granted.

I enjoyed the scene where the boy moves and we see the window cleaner, light relief is always appreciated. My wife thought your use of music was excellent and really added to the story.

May I also say that I hadn't really realised how good the "The Morning News" was until I saw it for the second time yesterday. I found the whole execution of your idea to be very tender and moving. I also had a smile about the news being reported in the background - until they mentioned Tony Blair at the end of the report you would have thought they were referring to Gordon Brown! (it's true what they say, what goes around comes around!)”

'Call me Son' had a different production quality, loved the music and the acting was superb, totally believed in the actor. As with "The Morning News" I had an emotional reaction to the film, a story told simply and powerfully. Definitely makes you consider those 9000+ children.

I came away wanting to see both films again............congratulations and thank you for doing what you do best - not taking No for an answer. I really appreciated "The Morning News" second time around, I think on the second viewing, my mind wasn't trying to figure out the 'plot' so could simply observe/experience the depth and tenderness of the performance, I was moved the first time I saw it, but second time round it really hit home emotionally.”

“Very though-provoking piece with lots of very clever touches. Song and music also beautifully done. A film to make you consider matters in a different light. Well done.”

We enjoyed Call Me Son an interesting storyline and very professionally done. The two films were very different so a comparison is perhaps inappropriate, but we found “The Morning News” had more of an impact and in fact I enjoyed and appreciated it better this time, as there were "bits" I hadn't picked up on at the original viewing.”

"I am sending you this email because I felt compelled to do so after seeing both your films.

The films are fabulous ...... the photography, filming and stills within the film reached the core of raw emotion and disbelief that we as man - 'kind'?? could be so cruel to another human being. Especially when 'children' such as this young lad fall into this type of situation by no fault of his own and appear to have to be punished for it !!!!!

Call me Son, even as I sit here writing this, leaves me foggy-eyed. I will always remember your 'intro' and how you explained the warmth and belonging attached to that good old norn-iron phrase 'son'. I had never dwelled on this before and had almost taken for granted the feeling behind it.

I loved the stills of the darkness and light and puddles which left you with that totally lost and abandoned feeling.......DREADFUL !!!!

It was my birthday on Monday and, instead of having a light hearted chat over coffee, I found myself crying with S., B. and my mum talking about your films!!!!

S is working in a nursing home at the minute as a physio and when I told her about Morning News she cried and between tears said this should be shown to staff in nursing homes!!!!

She told us the story of a man last week who S went over to chat to...a retired builder. His speech was poor but he said to S.

' I've been in here for a week and you are the first person to take the time to LISTEN to me!!!'

I found this film quite shocking and upsetting but again your intro described it perfectly!!!

As S. said.... people do not LISTEN ....everyone has a story and everyone's story is extremely important!! I am sorry for 'spilling' all this into an email.............."

CALL ME SON (2008)

A MY NEIGHBOUR FILMS PRODUCTION.

Comments from the Preview Screening at Queen's Film Theatre - Belfast, Sunday 15 September2008. We sent out invites by email and these got passed around. We ended up with a 200+ audience (a full cinema). I had to pay to hire the cinema and therefore decided to show my first film "The Morning News" also.

The thought behind the films is that we do not listen to or notice the "stories" that we (ordinary people) each have to tell. For the cynics among you none of the comments below are my relatives (they are too hard on me ;-) ).

Louis McCullagh - 16 September 2008.
